We had a great turnout for the May 2012 meeting, hosted in SF thanks to Jive as part of their JiveLive tour. Here's a summary of the event.
We started with introductions from the approximately 35-40 attendees. In addition to lubricating the networking opportunities by describing our roles and interests in Jive I also asked the participants if they were "Twitter people" or "Facebook people" - they couldn't like both sites equally. Here are the results:
- Facebook 72%
- Twitter 16%
- Neither 9%
- Google Plus 3% (there's always one rebel in the crowd)'
As a "Twitter person" this result makes me sad. But, definitely some interesting perspective from the attendees.
Next, Jive's olivia.teich gave us a great update on what's new with Jive, with particular emphasis on both new as well as upgraded features of Jive 6. This was a very well-done presentation with just the right amount of detail. Lots of exciting stuff!
Then SAP's scottlawley gave us an update on how SAP is using Jive. Scott previously spoke at the July 2011 Bay Area User Group Meeting about their plans to upgrade their SAP Community Network. The SCN features of number of enhancements to the base Jive platform and Scott talked about some of major components of his team's work, including taxonomy alignment, customized SAP-branded navigation, a custom point template engine, extensions to the user profile, and more. Scott also provided a demo of the site.
Scott's key takeaways were:
- People: Get the right people involved and be a team
- Budget: Make sure the project is properly funded. Make good decisions; don't skimp
- Time: Set realistic goals. Be ready to extend beyond your intended launch date
After a short break, I led some roundtable discussions around big topics such as upgrading your Jive instance, how to roll out an upgrade or a new awareness campaign, and how to keep your users engaged. There were lots of questions and plenty of advice from people who've done it.
We ended the event with cocktail reception sponsored by our friends at Jive.
